Head of Faustina the Younger

Head with oval face and closed lips. The hair is centrally parted and dressed in fine waves at either side. It is tied in a chignon at the nape of her neck. She wears a diadem.
19th century restauration to marble tip of the nose and small chip to diadem.
Faustina Minor, daughter of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius and Roman Empress Faustina the Elder was born circa 130 AD in Rom. In 145 AD Faustina was married to Marcus Aurelius, she died in 175/176 in Cappadocia.
Provenance
The head of Faustina was mounted on a 19th century bust. Inscription on the backside: Tête trouvée à Bavay 1807.
