Portrait head

Roman – late severic, circa 230 – 235 AD
White fine grained marble.
H 32.5 cm

Over life-size portrait head of a young man, slightly turned to the left, with eyes gaze upward. The elongated face has a resolute expression. The mouth is closed and pupils of the deep-set eyes are incised and pierced. He has full, short hair and a short beard.

In the top head a hole with iron pin, probably the remnant of a cheniscus for repelling pigeons.

Lower lip partially repaired, nose missing, abrasions. On the surface root marks and sinter.

A portrait of very good quality.
